Google counts every word on its home page in an effort to maximize page-loading speed and present an uncluttered user interface, but it often uses the few words below its search box to promote different efforts. The text for the energy savings plan reads, “Haunted by high energy costs? Here are some easy ways to save.”

However, Google Blogoscoped pointed out, the link doesn’t work in some countries outside the United States.

LinkedIn with apps makes social networking actuall

28 Apr 2010

LinkedIn does social networking right. It gives me relevant information, doesn’t pretend that everyone I’ve ever thought of (and many that I haven’t) are my “friends,” and generally treats me like an adult. With the addition of applications like TripIt, it just became even better.

Names have been smudged to protect the innocent.

This is what Dopplr should have been, but it requires me to recreate my schedule (and network) just for it. I tried it for a few weeks a

Lilliputian readies fuel-cell gadget charger

25 Apr 2010

Since its founding seven years ago, Lilluptian Systems has been quiet about its product development but has revealed a few more details in the past few weeks. Its financial backers, which include Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Atlas Ventures, and Rockport Capital, have put at least $88 million into the company.

Liquid fuel cells have the potential to give gadget users a longer run time than batteries and provide portable back-up power. But they do require the availability

Apple sued over Apple TV

21 Apr 2010

“Each of these employees had access to (Universal’s) confidential and proprietary information, and left (Universal) for Apple within 30 days of each other in the second quarter of 2005,” the complaint says. “Apple TV was commercially introduced in September 2006.”

EZ4Media is seeking an injunction prohibiting Apple from further acts of infringement, as well as “damages adequate to compensate it for the infringement that has occurred, but in no event less than a reasonable royalty

Google Street View The musical extravaganza

20 Apr 2010

What will remain far more interesting to most are all the unintentionally peculiar things caught in Street View’s cameras, which continued to be chronicled by eagle-eyed individuals. On that front, worth checking out is StreetViewGallery, which has a Reddit-like system for promoting funny found Street View shots to the top.

The result is a few square blocks of the zaniness that will be forever preserved for others to see–that is, unti

Google Chrome now bundled with RealPlayer

19 Apr 2010

Chrome is now included as an option when installing RealPlayer.

The option to install Chrome is checked by default, which no doubt will help some people to add the software without really deliberating much on its merits or drawbacks. However, the Chrome option shows on a separate stage of installation, so it’s not hidden on some invisible “advanced options” section off the beaten track of the process.

SitOrSquat tells you where to go (literally)

In addition to its GPS locating, the mobile application lets you take photos of the facilities from your phone’s camera, which go into a central library others can eyeball before they go. You can also add new locations right from your device, which will get pushed up live to the service’s network of bathrooms.

SitOrSquat is a handy service that helps you find the nearest public bathroom. Unlike MizPee, which has been doing this since

Facebook hires D.C. lawyer as general counsel

19 Apr 2010

“Ted has extremely strong connections with the Republican party, and we think that’s a good thing,” Schrage told the Times. COO Sandberg, on the other hand, has political experience from the other side of the aisle: she served as chief of staff to former President Bill Clinton’s Department of the Treasury.

Don’t hold your breath for DRM-free iTunes news

18 Apr 2010

Yes, Apple is in negotiations with the three biggest music labels, Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group about acquiring licenses to sell music free of digital rights management software.

Rumors coming out of Europe that claim Apple will begin offering unprotected music files from the three largest recording companies on Tuesday are bogus, according to my music-industry sources.

It’s important to note that Apple and the mus

Would you buy a Cisco home audio system

18 Apr 2010

So today’s news from The New York Times–that networking giant Cisco Systems is getting into the consumer electronics business–filled me with dread.

The support itself was great–a real person always picked up immediately, and they were always able to resolve my problem eventually–but the complexity of the underyling technology just couldn’t be hidden. Any support call that asks you to log into your router to check your DHCP settings is not simple, even if you are walked th
